Alexander’s first job was that of clerk at George Weyand’s general store at Nassau. There he met Emma Weyand, who would become his wife. After several years, he became employed by Knittle’s General Store in Burton. He then bought the Zapp store in Round Top, before selling the operation in 1900. At that time he moved his family to La Grange and bought the White Dairy. He ran this business as a dairy and meat market, then later as a general store. Later, he became successful at trading horses and cattle, and then real estate. It was from him that the land for the La Grange Fairgrounds was purchased.

Alexander enjoyed music, especially playing the piano. Although an active Democrat, he never sought public office. In 1914 he became a member of La Grange’s St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Late in high life it was necessary for him to undergo a delicate eye operation which likely hastened his death.

Emma enjoyed her early life on the plantation at Nassau, especially the animals. She was also quite popular with the young people. After marrying Alexander, she raised her six children, and remained a devoted companion to her husband, who was often ill. In 1914, she, along with the remainder of her family, received the rites of baptism and confirmation, becoming members of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in La Grange.

In April, 1930, the family celebrated Emma’s and Alex’s golden wedding anniversary. A few days later they visited their daughter Louise and her husband in El Paso. During this visit they also traveled into Mexico. Before returning home, Alexander submitted to a delicate eye operation from which he never fully recovered. After Alex died, Emma lost interest in many things, living resignedly and quiet. In October, 1942, she had a severe fall, became an invalid, and died months later.

Eugen arrived in Texas with his parents in 1849, settling on the Nassau Plantation. Soon he owned his own livestock. In adulthood he farmed and ran a freight express to the nearest railroad station. After serving in the Civil War, he made trips to Mexico to sell cotton. He enjoyed smoking a pipe, keeping a small patch of tobacco in his garden.

Carl married Theodore Anna Arnoldine Henriette (Dorchen) SACK on 17 Dec 1853 in Round Top, Fayette, Texas, USA. Theodore (daughter of Eduard Wilhelm Hieronimus Maximilian SACK and Dorothea Catharina Elisabeth FICKER) was born on 7 May 1829 in Düsseldorf, Rheinprovinz, Prussia, Germany; died on 21 Mar 1904 in Round Top, Fayette, Texas, USA; was buried on 22 Mar 1904 in Florida Chapel Cemetery, Round Top, Fayette, Texas, USA. Theodora was educated in Dusseldorf, Germany, specializing in music. She arrived in Texas in 1849, settling near Round Top. She moved into town after marrying Wilhelm von Roeder. They had one child, a daughter named Marie, who married Tony van Hutton. After von Roeder’s death, she married Carl Eugen von Rosenberg.

Theodora taught piano and voice for more than forty years. She directed the Round Top Mixed Choir for many years, entertained at her home, painted, and engaged in filet. Many members of her family called her “Tante Dorchen.”

Peter Carl Johann von Rosenberg was the third son of Otto von Rosenberg and his second wife, Maria Wilhelmine von Stempel-von Rosenberg, of Raddeilen and Eckitten Estates. He was nine years old when his parents were divorced and we know nothing of his early life and education. He enlisted in the Prussian Army at an early ago and at twenty-one he became a lieutenant in the cavalry. He was a member of the Uhlans and on the old scroll he is called a Jager, which was a title given to certain German cavalry regiments.

He later told his grandson Arthur von Rosenberg that in the Battle of Leipzig his horse's mouth was shot away, but he quickly mounted another horse whose rider had been killed.

He fought with the Prussian guards under Bluecher with Wellington. When Napoleon faced the English on Belgian soil at Waterloo, with the remnant of the once-defeated Prussians and the fresh Prussian forces under Bluecher, the tide of the battle turned on June 18, 1815. The histories tell us this Prussian Guard knew how to die but not how to surrender.

The Uhlans fought with lances. They were chiefly employed for reconnoitering, skirmishing, and outpost duty. Originally they were light cavalry. Peter Carl was a Lieutenant in this company at Waterloo, we learn from the old scroll and from letters.

In 1819 he inherited Eckitten Estate after the death of his widowed stepmother, and the same year he married Johanna Dorothea Froelich. They had four children before she died at the age of twenty-nine, six weeks after the birth of Johannes.

Peter Carl was a "Frei Denker" and in the disturbing days of 1848 was severely criticized for his political views. The consequent humiliation of the family was the direct cause of the immigration to Texas.



The family of Carl von Rosenberg departed from Bremen, Germany on 1 Oct 1849 and arrived at Galveston, Texas on 2 Dec 1849. They travelled on the ship Franziska.

Peter married Amanda Henriette Louise FALLIER on 11 Feb 1830 in Memel, Memel, Preußen, Prussia. Amanda (daughter of Jean Pierre FALLIER and Anne Caroline MARQUARDT) was born on 6 Sep 1806 in Königsberg, Ostpreußen, Prussia; died on 22 Apr 1864 in Round Top, Fayette, Texas, USA; was buried in Richters Cemetery, Round Top, Fayette, Texas, USA. Amanda was baptized Amande Henriette Louise. Her godparents at the French Reformed Church in Königsberg were Mr. Jean Frédéric Marquart, Mr. Guillaume Schubert, Mrs. Marie Hagen, councillor and secretary, and Mrs. Marie Anne Matz.
