  1. 1.  Quincy Victor MILLER, Jr. was born on 8 Nov 1919 in Ballinger, Runnels, Texas, USA (son of Quincy Victor MILLER and Julia Lena VON ROSENBERG); died on 15 Jan 2002; was buried on 22 Apr 2002 in Tahoma National Cemetery, Kent, King, Washington, USA.

    Notes:

Vic grew up through the years of drought, depression, and dust storms of West Texas. He attended John Tarleton College and the University of Texas. When the war began in 1941 he left the university his junior year and joined the Air Corps as an aviation cadet. His military career included serving in World War II and the Korean War. In World War II, he trained in B-17s, was a lead pilot, and flew one of the few radar-equipped aircraft. He saw action in some of the greatest aerial battles of that war and was awarded three Distinguished Flying Crosses, the Purple Heart, five Air Medals, and many commendations. He was also credited with three enemy aircraft destroyed in combat. After returning to the United States in 1944, he completed command and general staff school. He served in training command positions, including division level staff and squadron commander. At the outset of the Korean War, he was sent to the Far East. Among other duties, his squadron operated as bush pilots, moving supplies, people, and casualties, and as couriers to Japan. He was awarded a fourth DFC. The rest of Vic's career included carrying cargo across the Pacific, serving as wing inspector, and working in the intelligence section TAC during the U-2 loss, the Bay of Pigs, and the Cuban Missile Crisis. After retirement, he and his wife bought a small ranch in Mill City, Oregon; he went back to school, got a degree in engineering and a job at Douglas Aircraft. He retired from Douglas and took a contract job with Boeing and helped the design of the 767 and 757 airliners. Vic did all he had ever dreamed of—cowboy, pilot, military officer, engineer scientist and even stockbroker. He liked hunting and fishing including skeet shooting in which he received numerous trophies.

  1. 2.  Quincy Victor MILLER was born on 16 Dec 1890 in Ballinger, Runnels, Texas, USA (son of Charles S. MILLER and Emilie HAAK); died on 17 Aug 1954 in Ballinger, Runnels, Texas, USA; was buried on 19 Aug 1954 in Evergreen Cemetery, Ballinger, Runnels, Texas, USA.

    Notes:

At the age of 14 Vic was tangled while hitching a spirited team of horses. Tetanus had to be administered to safe his life, but one leg was amputated. Severed nerves would continue to cause him pain. However, it did not stop him from riding and driving or hunting and fishing.

After graduating with a degree in law, Vic joined his father’s bank in Ballinger and then managed his father-in-law’s compress business in Elgin. However, his father’s death brought financial disaster. He did manage to salvage the familiy home for his mother as well as a modest income. Determined to avoid his father’s countywide promotions, Vic dedicated his practice to the unfortunate, the small businessman, and the farmer. He often only accepted a day of yard work as his fee.

Vic tried his hand at a bottling works, a race for County Judge, and in dealing oil, cotton, grain, and livestock. After tiring of office work, he worked land that his father had sold to Julia, his wife. He converted the farm to ranch and registered the “Running V” brand.

He taught his children tennis and bridge as well as to swim, ride and shoot. He was loved by the youth of the community and would manage a picnic or camp for Boy Scouts or Camp Fire Girls. He suffered a head injury in an auto accident in Austin. He soldiered on for two months before passing away.

  1. 12.  Johannes Carl VON ROSENBERG was born on 21 Mar 1826 in Eckitten, Memel, Ostpreußen, Prussia (son of Peter Carl Johann VON ROSENBERG and Johanna Dorothea FROELICH); died on 9 Nov 1906 in La Grange, Fayette, Texas, USA; was buried on 10 Nov 1906 in La Grange City Cemetery, La Grange, Fayette, Texas, USA.

    Notes:

Johannes was born at the Eckitten Estate. When he was a few weeks old, his mother died. The Veithofer-Froelich grandmother immediately took him and raised him until his father remarried. He was schooled at the Paul-Narmund Estate and was mobilized in the National Guards of East Prussia after having received his education. After serving his term in the Guards, he became a Sergeant Major in the infantry.

He held no fond feelings for the Germany he left in 1849 as evidenced in an letter he wrote his favorite cousin, Lottchen von Holty in Germany. “As the news came to me in Saxony, where I was Oekonomie Inspector at the age of twenty-three that our beautiful Eckitten was, to my notion, squandered by being sold at a loss, and that many unpleasantries were happening to my family, and also with much disagreeable and disturing news from my beloved Litthauen, my life was so embittered that I left for America with the vow never to be heard from again in Germany. Now it is nearly thirty years since, and this is the first letter that I send across the ocean; I never received one either and never cared to read one that did come; but as you, dear cousin, would like to know something about each of us, I shall write now to please you.”

Johannes married shortly after arriving in Texas. They lived on a farm that was a part of the Nassau Plantation in Fayette County. He had cultivated that land while boarding with his sister, Hannchen Hellmuth. He later bought a farm at Evergreen in Washington County. After the Civil War began, he and his older brother William served together in the Engineer’s Corps in East Texas.

After his return from the war he gave up farming, moved into Round Top, and resided there until his wife died in 1894. There he began a mercantile business and an inn which was well known to travelers. After the death of his wife he retired and moved in with his two unmarried daughters, Hulda and Wilhelmine.

Johannes was said to be a charming but quiet man who was sweet and gentle. As for a hobby, it was the same in Texas as it had been at Eckitten: raising pigeons.

Johannes married Julia Wilhelmine Christine GROOS on 26 Oct 1850 in Round Top, Fayette, Texas, USA. Julia (daughter of Carl Apollo Wilhelm GROOS and Sophie Wilhelmine Louise MARTIN) was born on 29 Apr 1829 in Straßebersbach, Dillenburg, Nassau; died on 22 Mar 1894 in Round Top, Fayette, Texas, USA; was buried in La Grange City Cemetery, La Grange, Fayette, Texas, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 13.  Julia Wilhelmine Christine GROOS was born on 29 Apr 1829 in Straßebersbach, Dillenburg, Nassau (daughter of Carl Apollo Wilhelm GROOS and Sophie Wilhelmine Louise MARTIN); died on 22 Mar 1894 in Round Top, Fayette, Texas, USA; was buried in La Grange City Cemetery, La Grange, Fayette, Texas, USA.

    Notes:

Julia came to Texas in 1848 at the age of 19 years with her father and siblings. Her mother had died in 1844, and the family had suffered business losses. The family lived their first year in Texas as renters on the old Ernst place near Industry, but the father soon bought a farm that had been a part of Nassau Plantation. With this move they became neighbors of the von Rosenberg family.

Julia was a busy housekeeper who also found time to help friends and neighbors. She was part of a group of women who took turns cooking soup for sick neighbors. Her only outside interests were quilting parties and the midafternoon “Kaffee Klatch” with the other women. Small in stature and energetic, she wore her hair in braids tied around her head with a black velvet bow. She is remembered for her gentle manners, good fashion taste and home decorations.
