1379 Paul spent most of his life in Austin before moving to Lubbock County in 1913. He was a stockman and farmer but was also engaged in the mercantile business. He served as a county commission in both Travis and Lubbock counties, holding the latter position at the time the Lubbock County courthouse was built. Paul was an elder in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in both Austin and Lubbock.

Paul’s tombstone gives his year of birth as 1852; however, his obituary and death record give 1854. The latter is more consistent with various censuses.
VON ROSENBERG, Paul (I3918)

1380 Paul was born at the Nassau Farm and attended school in Round Top and La Grange. He went to university at Hildesheim, Germany with his brother Axel. However, he returned to Texas the next summer. In La Grange, he studied law under Judge Teichmuller and later at Vanderbilt University, graduating in the class of 1881. At one time he served as deputy sheriff in La Grange for two years. He practiced law in La Grange until 1889 when he moved his family to San Antonio, joining his brother in the real estate business. In 1900 he was elected Bexar County Tax Collector, serving until 1908.

He and his wife celebrated their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary while on board ship to Germany. Then at the age of 57 he had a severe case of pneumonia, leaving him very weak. As a result, he was ordered by a physician to spend some time in New Mexico. Years later he acquired diabetes, later dying from complications of this illness.
MEERSCHEIDT, Paul (I3039)

1381 Paula attended the public schools, and as a child was very active in sports. She was married to Henry Hein on November 28, 1923, and two sons were born to this union, Henry M., who gave his life for his country in World War II, and Robert who is a pharmacist.

1384 Peter Carl Johann von Rosenberg was the third son of Otto von Rosenberg and his second wife, Maria Wilhelmine von Stempel-von Rosenberg, of Raddeilen and Eckitten Estates. He was nine years old when his parents were divorced and we know nothing of his early life and education. He enlisted in the Prussian Army at an early ago and at twenty-one he became a lieutenant in the cavalry. He was a member of the Uhlans and on the old scroll he is called a Jager, which was a title given to certain German cavalry regiments.

He later told his grandson Arthur von Rosenberg that in the Battle of Leipzig his horse's mouth was shot away, but he quickly mounted another horse whose rider had been killed.

He fought with the Prussian guards under Bluecher with Wellington. When Napoleon faced the English on Belgian soil at Waterloo, with the remnant of the once-defeated Prussians and the fresh Prussian forces under Bluecher, the tide of the battle turned on June 18, 1815. The histories tell us this Prussian Guard knew how to die but not how to surrender.

The Uhlans fought with lances. They were chiefly employed for reconnoitering, skirmishing, and outpost duty. Originally they were light cavalry. Peter Carl was a Lieutenant in this company at Waterloo, we learn from the old scroll and from letters.

In 1819 he inherited Eckitten Estate after the death of his widowed stepmother, and the same year he married Johanna Dorothea Froelich. They had four children before she died at the age of twenty-nine, six weeks after the birth of Johannes.

Peter Carl was a "Frei Denker" and in the disturbing days of 1848 was severely criticized for his political views. The consequent humiliation of the family was the direct cause of the immigration to Texas.
