In 1943 his immediate family moved to Austin where Bob graduated from Austin High School in 1948. In 1948, his family moved to Las Cruces, New Mexico where he attended New Mexico State University. After graduation with a degree in business, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force and was assigned to Bergstrom Air Force Base in Austin, Texas. While looking up an old friend by the name of Joe von Rosenberg who lived just two blocks from where Bob once resided, he met his future wife. Shortly after they married, he left the service. He was recalled to active duty in 1962 and was assigned to Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico. Subsequent assignments included Kadena Air Force Base in Okonawa, Edwards Air Force Base and Norton Air Force Base, both in California, Ramstein Air Base in Germany and Warner Robbins in Georgia.
