  1. 1.  Quincy Victor MILLER was born on 16 Dec 1890 in Ballinger, Runnels, Texas, USA; died on 17 Aug 1954 in Ballinger, Runnels, Texas, USA; was buried on 19 Aug 1954 in Evergreen Cemetery, Ballinger, Runnels, Texas, USA.

    Notes:

At the age of 14 Vic was tangled while hitching a spirited team of horses. Tetanus had to be administered to safe his life, but one leg was amputated. Severed nerves would continue to cause him pain. However, it did not stop him from riding and driving or hunting and fishing.

After graduating with a degree in law, Vic joined his father’s bank in Ballinger and then managed his father-in-law’s compress business in Elgin. However, his father’s death brought financial disaster. He did manage to salvage the familiy home for his mother as well as a modest income. Determined to avoid his father’s countywide promotions, Vic dedicated his practice to the unfortunate, the small businessman, and the farmer. He often only accepted a day of yard work as his fee.

Vic tried his hand at a bottling works, a race for County Judge, and in dealing oil, cotton, grain, and livestock. After tiring of office work, he worked land that his father had sold to Julia, his wife. He converted the farm to ranch and registered the “Running V” brand.

He taught his children tennis and bridge as well as to swim, ride and shoot. He was loved by the youth of the community and would manage a picnic or camp for Boy Scouts or Camp Fire Girls. He suffered a head injury in an auto accident in Austin. He soldiered on for two months before passing away.

When the war began in 1941 he left the university his junior year and joined the Air Corps as an aviation cadet. His military career included serving in World War II and the Korean War. In World War II, he trained in B-17s, was a lead pilot, and flew one of the few radar-equipped aircraft. He saw action in some of the greatest aerial battles of that war and was awarded three Distinguished Flying Crosses, the Purple Heart, five Air Medals, and many commendations. He was also credited with three enemy aircraft destroyed in combat. After returning to the United States in 1944, he completed command and general staff school. He served in training command positions, including division level staff and squadron commander. At the outset of the Korean War, he was sent to the Far East. Among other duties, his squadron operated as bush pilots, moving supplies, people, and casualties, and as couriers to Japan. He was awarded a fourth DFC. The rest of Vic's career included carrying cargo across the Pacific, serving as wing inspector, and working in the intelligence section TAC during the U-2 loss, the Bay of Pigs, and the Cuban Missile Crisis. After retirement, he and his wife bought a small ranch in Mill City, Oregon; he went back to school, got a degree in engineering and a job at Douglas Aircraft. He retired from Douglas and took a contract job with Boeing and helped the design of the 767 and 757 airliners. Vic did all he had ever dreamed of—cowboy, pilot, military officer, engineer scientist and even stockbroker. He liked hunting and fishing including skeet shooting in which he received numerous trophies.
