  After the death of his father, Furman lived with his mother until the outbreak of World War II when he went to work in Fort Worth at an aircraft factory for the duration of the war. He served in the Coast Guard and then moved to Houston where he worked for the Ford & Buick Company. He also did mechanical work for the midget auto car races. He retired about 1979.
