  • Notes
    • Bill earned BA and MA degrees from the University of Texas, and a PhD from the University of Michigan. He taught biological chemistry in medical schools in Texas, Michigan, and Alabama. He was a member of Phi Chi social fraternity, Phi Beta Kappa, and Sigma Xi. He worked in cancer research from 1950 to 1954 at M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston. The family then moved to Birmingham, Alabama, where he taught at the University of Alabama Medical School until he retired in 1981. Bill enjoyed target shooting, hunting, fishing, and traveling. During an extended power outage during the Blizzard of 1993, Bill suffered a fall while at home alone and was unable to tend the fireplace. By the time help arrived, he already suffered from hypothermia.
