  Sylvia did not learn to speak English until she started country school. She and her siblings walked to attend a one room country school about a mile from their home. She traveled to Taylor, Texas to attend high school and was the first of her siblings to graduate. Sylvia was part of a double quartet made up of her brothers and sisters. They sang over the radio in Austin, Texas during the 1930s. She was active in SOKOL as a young adult. She sang alto in the Taylor Brethren Church choir and also taught Sunday School for the 10-12 year olds.
